During my junior year of high school, I independently created a film-based photography exhibit called ‘Darker’ surrounding the black experience as it’s seen through an artistic lens. When conceptualizing the idea, I wanted to understand how the black experience differs from one person to the next and how our similarities bring us together as a whole, emphasizing the importance of black representation and artistic expression. Throughout Black History Month, I facilitated 10 photoshoots and interviews of students and staff in my school surrounding their interests; each person’s passions and beliefs differing from the next. Through this series, I was able to analyze and begin to understand the beautiful ways each African American person differs individually, the ways we’re similar, and the immense importance of Black artistry.
